COAT & GROOM TIPS

Bearded Collies have a double coat. The undercoat is soft, furry and fairly short. The outer coat is more coarse, not wooly, somewhat straight and subject to matting if not maintained. The de-matting process for a Bearded Collie coat may be significantly eased by using spray-on detangling products designed for use before the bath.

The Bearded Collie requires a thorough brush and comb out before the bath, and it must be fluff-dried, never cage-dried, for maximum and proper effect. After fluff-drying, comb the hair once again to a beautifully comb-styled presentation and removing any last tangles. Don't forget a part down the back.

Using dryers on a moderate setting, force dryers not recommended unless set to a low setting. Some groomers prefer to use a pin brush instead of slicker brush for the hand fluff dry process. You can expect even more loose hair to remove after the bath, and finish with a final comb out. Some areas of hair may dry and curl before they are hand fluff-dried, and if so, lightly dampen the curled areas and then brush and dry to remove curls.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

If you don't fully remove the undercoat along the spine you are not going to be able to make a well-defined part.

Scissor hair pads even and free of stray hairs. Check of debris that may have accumulated. After bathing and drying scissor the feet evenly. Ears should be long and natural. Sometimes a light use of thinning shears can even the coat along the back and neck to attain a more even part and appealing natural look. Hair on the chest is combed down toward the table. This may not be appropriate for show grooming.

Use a force dryer to blow off excess water after the bath and save yourself a great deal of time in drying this breed. Do not overly dry the dog and bake the hair using a "hot" setting. Instead use a pin brush in long strokes and dry on warm. Complete with a thorough comb.

Feces may get trapped by hair around the anus. Be sure to clean the area as part of your pre-bath duties. Once dried touch up this area lightly with scissors to prevent feces from becoming trapped until the next grooming. Don't cut the tail; it should be full.

Multi-Breed Books

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
