COAT & GROOM TIPS

The coat of the Bedlington Terrier is very distinctive for its mixture of both hard and soft hair standing. The A.K.C. looks for it to be "Crisp to the touch but not wiry, having a tendency to curl, especially on the head and face. When in show trim must not exceed 1 inch on body; hair on legs is slightly longer."

Bedlington Terriers may acquire stained hairs around their eyes from watering between grooming appointments. You may need to snip some of the stained hairs away very carefully with scissors. As always, when scissoring or clipping near any dog's eyes, you must have solid control of head movements by properly gripping their muzzle firmly, yet gently.

The coat of a Bedlington Terrier doesn't benefit from a shampoo with conditioners or cream rinses that leaves a moderate or greater conditioning residue. A gentle shampoo is fine; in fact baby shampoo works well on the head and ears.

The styling of a Bedlington Terrier is quite specific and not suited to beginners. We strongly recommend using what books are available as reference guides such as the All 160 Breed Dog Grooming book available in our bookstore, seeking the help of a professional groomer or school or training program.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

The coat of a Bedlington dries so quickly with a force dryer I don't overly towel dry the pet after its bath. The coat curls almost immediately. For this type of coat I often use a spray bottle of clean water to wet areas that dry and curl before I reach those spots with the dryer.

The English trim of a Bedlington Terrier is different. It's very difficult to get pictures. Generally it appears shorter on the legs and more areas are shaved. Keep your eye out for pictures in English publications or the Crufts show.

Multi-Breed Books Including Affenpinscher

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
