Introduction

This Main Menu could the most important one you read in all of PetGroomer.com. Read carefully every page if you are considering going to a school of grooming.

Your choice of a school is vitally important to your career. Choosing a school simply because it is close to your home can be a serious detriment to your career. Your schooling is an investment in your career of perhaps a LIFETIME. Find a way to attend the best school that meets your personal and business career goals. If need be, travel to attend the school. Overcome the limitations that say you "cannot" do what is best for your career needs. It's your professional future and livelihood at stake.

PetGroomer.com offers career information and a directory of schools of pet grooming as a convenience to its visitors like you, but we do not represent this list as being a complete list of all schools of pet grooming. Nor do we endorse any one school in particular. Use this directory to help locate your pet grooming school choices. If you do not find a school listed in a desired area, and you are looking in the U.S. region, consider checking for a school using CD-ROM business phonebooks and Internet search engines.

You are wise to ensure that the institution you select is properly approved to provide pet grooming education per the appropriate governing bodies and law applicable to its operating location. We have listed accreditation and licensing information for some schools as they provide. It is your responsibility to ensure your school is currently state licensed before you enroll in the institution. Most states require schools in their jurisdiction to provide all prospective students with the name and contact information for the state agency responsible for licensing a vocational school.

Your first step is to contact the schools of your interest and request their brochure (Catalog), and then to thoroughly review the contents and follow-up with a site tour and interview with the institution's administration. Not all institutions may offer job placement programs and tuition assistance. If these are important to you, discuss the alternatives with the institution's administration.

PetGroomer.com highly-recommends pet grooming education to persons with an interest in a career as a pet groomer and pet grooming business owner. You will of course require more experience following your education. Not all schools of pet grooming are alike, and you should comparison shop. Choosing a school simply because it is the nearest one to your home is not making an informed decision, but of course, the ultimate decision lies with you. Courses that also offer some pet grooming management training are preferable even when your goal is to become employed, and not self-employed. Understanding the fundamentals of pet grooming management can lead to more effective and profitable working relationships with your employer.

If you are seeking employment as a pet groomer, the most extensive course offered is likely to be of more benefit to your career. For example, a course focusing on pet bathing often leads to employment as a "pet bather" and not employment in more responsible position commonly associated with the title, "pet groomer." Generally, the term "pet groomer" refers to someone with the abilities to not only bathe pets (pet bather), but to also perform pre-clips (initial trimming duties prior to bathing), and "finish trimming." It is highly-beneficial for your finish trimming instruction to expose you to multiple breed groups and mixed breed pets.

We also recommend exposure to cat grooming as well. You may encounter the term "Master Pet Trimmer." It is best used to represent a pet groomer that has earned the title with significant post-education experience, and it may be backed with more formal certification. In summary, if you are seeking pet grooming education in order to lead to a more stable and profitable career as a "pet groomer," enroll in the most extensive course offered of at least 300 to 600 hours, and after graduation, maintain an aggressive approach toward learning more and more. Become active in the pet grooming industry. A number of institutions are now offering "refresher" courses which may interest today's pet groomers.
