I am a mobile groomer and had an appointment scheduled for a Cocker Spaniel that the owner told me was matted. When I arrived they brought Cookie from the backyard, and my jaw dropped open. There was this little Cocker with matts so bad they were like cement casings on her legs, ears, chest and neck. I explained to the owner (after a few tears) that this was a severe case and I could not humanely groom her without being sedated by a vet. I convinced the owner to sign over his ownership of Cookie to me and I immediately took her to my vet, had her sedated and began the grooming while at the vet's office. I had to use a #40 blade and even that was difficult. She weighed 23lbs before I began and 18lbs when finished. Her skin was pretty raw so we immediately started her on antibiotics. I let her skin rest 5 days before finishing the groom. For about a week poor Cookie kept lifting her legs when she walked because she was used to all the weight hanging on her. She also had to remember what it was like to bend her legs and what the grass felt like on her feet. "Cookie" has a new home now and gets groomed every 6 weeks.
